AbacusAI Google Workspace Add-on
The AbacusAI Assistant for Google Docs, Sheets & Slides brings Abacus.AI directly into Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides. It opens as a sidebar inside the editor and works as an agent on the file you already have open. Ask for a summary, a rewrite, a totals column, a chart, or a whole slide outline, and it reads the file and makes the edits in place as native, fully editable Google content.
Like the AbacusAI Office Add-in, it is not a data-ingestion connector. It is Abacus.AI running inside your Google Workspace editors.
How it works
- Install once, sign in with your Abacus.AI account. One install from the Google Workspace Marketplace covers Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Sign in from the sidebar with a one-time code, using the same account you use for ChatLLM (or create one in the same step).
- Grounded in the open file. The assistant reads the document, spreadsheet, or presentation you have open, so there is no copy-pasting context back and forth. It cannot open, list, or access any other file in your Google Drive.
- Agentic, step-by-step work. It plans, searches the web with citations when a task needs facts, and applies changes directly to the file.
- Asks before it removes. Actions that delete content ask for your approval first, and every change stays in the file's version history, so you can always undo.
What each editor can do, in one line:
| Editor | Typical asks |
|---|---|
| Google Docs | Summarize long documents, rewrite in a different tone or length, find and replace, draft new sections in place |
| Google Sheets | Write formulas, format ranges, build charts and summary tables, explain what the data shows |
| Google Slides | Build slides from the layouts already in your deck, add speaker notes, tighten existing slides |
The add-on runs in Docs, Sheets, and Slides in a desktop browser. Google editor add-ons do not run in the Docs, Sheets, and Slides mobile apps.
Installation
Both ways to install are covered step by step on the Get started page:
- Install it yourself. Open the AbacusAI listing on the Google Workspace Marketplace, click Install, and allow the permissions. Then, in any Doc, Sheet, or Slides file, go to Extensions → AbacusAI → Open AbacusAI for Docs (or Sheets, or Slides).
- Deploy it for your organization. A Google Workspace admin can install the add-on for everyone, or for specific organizational units and groups, from the Google Admin console under Apps → Google Workspace Marketplace apps → Apps list. Changes can take up to 24 hours to reach every user, and each user still signs in to their own Abacus.AI account from the sidebar.
Good first prompts to try are on the Get started page.
Permissions and privacy
Google asks for these permissions the first time you open the sidebar:
| Permission | Why the add-on needs it |
|---|---|
| View and manage the document, spreadsheet, or presentation the add-on is installed in | To read the file you currently have open and apply the edits you ask for. It has no access to any other file in your Google Drive. |
| Display and run third-party web content in prompts and sidebars inside Google applications | To show the assistant's chat panel in the sidebar. |
| See your primary Google Account email address | To pre-fill your email when you sign in to Abacus.AI from the sidebar. |
Content from the open file is sent to Abacus.AI only when you submit a request, used to produce that response, and never used to train AI models. The privacy page covers the details.
